Dr. Shorten is board certified in neurology and sleep medicine. He practices general neurology with a specific interest in sleep medicine. As a neurologist, Dr. Shorten chose to specialize in sleep medicine due to the interwoven nature of sleep health and neurological function. In addition to sleep disorders, Dr. Shorten has interest and experience in general neurological problems. He is experienced in the use of botulinum toxin (BOTOX) for treatment of migraine headaches. He particularly has interest in stroke, dementia and Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Shorten grew up in rural Kansas and continues to call Kansas home. When not working he and his wife enjoy an active lifestyle including playing tennis, mountain biking, hunting and fishing.
